The results of the study included 18,462 (41% African American, 51% women, mean age 65.8 years), participants who reported no stroke or TIA. The prevalence of stroke symptoms was 5.8% for sudden painless weakness hemibody, 8.5% for sudden numbness hemibody, 4.6% for sudden painless vision loss in one or both eyes, 3.1% for sudden loss of visual hemifield, 2 to 7% in sudden inability to understand speech, and 3.8% for the sudden failure of linguistic expressions. One or more symptoms was 17.8%. Compared with the first quartile of the Framingham stroke risk score adjusted odds ratio of one or more symptoms of stroke increased from 1.0 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.90 to 1, 2) in the second quartile to 1.2 (1995% CI, -1.5 1 million) and 1.5 (95% CI, 3.1-6.1) in successive quarters. Symptoms were more prevalent among African American compared with white participants and among people with low incomes, lower education, and fair to poor perceived health status.

The results of the population without pre-diagnosis of TIA or stroke have a high prevalence of stroke symptoms. The relationship between symptoms and risk factors indicate that some individuals have clinically undetected symptomatic stroke and may benefit from aggressive stroke prevention.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Brings Hope To Children With Autism Symptoms

Recent studies in the medical world, on autism symptoms and autism treatment, bring not only hope, but actual help, to families with autistic children. Lead physician and researcher, Daniel Rossignol, M.D., treats children with autism. In the first randomized, controlled, double-blind multicenter trial, published in BMC Pediatrics and entitled “Hyperbaric treatment for children with autism: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial.” Dr. Rossignol and colleagues, from 6 centers in the USA, studied 62 children, aged 2-7 years, to assess the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in children showing autism symptoms.

The research trial concludes that children with autism who received hyperbaric for autism treatment in HBOT Chambers at 1.3 atmospheres and 24% oxygen for 40 hourly sessions had significant improvements in overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory/cognitive awareness compared to children who received slightly pressurized room air.

The children were randomly assigned to either 40 hours of hyperbaric treatment at 1.3 atm and 24% oxygen (treatment group) or slightly pressurized room air at 1.03 atm and 21% oxygen (non-treatment group). Clinical outcomes were evaluated by three different scales: the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), and the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC).

Dr. Rossignol said, “In our study, we observed significant improvements in several core autistic behaviors with the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment at 1.3 atm compared to children receiving near-placebo treatment. These findings confirm what we are seeing in clinical practice–that many children with autism may benefit with the use of this treatment.”
